Her Story

First off, Sean suggested ramen for a first date? Don’t get me wrong – love ramen. But seriously, did he think slurping ramen and getting soup everywhere was a good first-date look?

We ended up at Pilot Project, because the wait for ramen was unfortunately too long. However, Sean insisted we still have our soup date and said he was going to make me soup the next day. I laughed – sure, of course he will. But sure enough, he texted me the next day saying he had all the ingredients and was ready to make me soup. He comes over only to find that my kitchen was entirely unequipped to actually be used – I wouldn’t consider myself a cook per-say. So much so that when he goes to serve, he realizes I don’t own a ladle, so we end up using two very large spoons instead.

Fast forward another couple of days and the guy hand-delivers me a ladle to my house. Needless to say, the ladle (and all the other kitchen gadgets to follow) were just simple ways that Sean would show me love. I can’t remember the precise moment when I knew I wanted to marry him, but I do remember feeling so warm and curious and light when we were together. From doing everything all-at-once across the world, to doing absolutely nothing at home - there’s never been an easier person to love.

The soup, I’d give it a solid 8/10.

The relationship to follow, 7/0.00001 (which is like, a really big number).

His Story

I was not aware I would be making soup in 18 hours; I had none of the required ingredients for chicken tortilla, nor any forewarning that soup would be required so soon. Roughly halfway through the date I nervously committed to soup. This was merely a conduit to see her again quickly - I would not consider soup a passion of mine.

The store was packed as I walked the aisles collecting ingredients. I thought about the night prior. I remembered thinking she was cute, and when she sat down, she smiled in a way that was so heartfelt and pure. When she stood up, I noticed a flower tattoo on her ankle that I’d failed to notice previously. When she talked, there was so much passion and care given to the people and problems she discussed.

I was excited by her intelligence and warmth - I’d found what felt like a best friend.

Her kitchen had a pot and various spoons of the non-soup variety; I figured a ladle would be an appropriate gift at some point. I cooked and she sat in the kitchen doing homework. This I believe would count as our second date. We laughed a lot, and we talked about her job, and our big fluffy dreams, and Chicago, and her dog Piper. I scooped my slightly burned rice into a bowl and poured the broth on top, and we sat at the counter for hours. I left, and not very long after, we started seeing each other almost every day for the next five years. Her name is Chloe.
